Brazilian-Armenian designer Ara Vartanian hails from a family of jewellers, but the aesthetic he’s created with his eponymous line, which he founded in 2002, is all his own. The designer puts the dazzling stones he works with at the centre of his creative process, resulting in jewellery that highlight these gems’ unique beauty. Among some of the standout pieces in his collection are drop earrings set with cool, greenish-blue amazonites, that preserve the organic shape of these stones, through to a statement ring whose geometric, 18k white gold design gleams with fancy yellow diamonds.
Ara has boutiques in both São Paulo and London, the latter opened at the behest of Kate Moss, a long-time fan of Ara’s work. The model even collaborated with the designer on a limited-edition collection of jewellery in 2017, which took its cues from historical and spiritual symbols, that captured “the belief that people have in the spirituality of the natural world,” Ara told Women’s Wear Daily.
This fusion of symbolism and clean, geometric lines is a hallmark of Ara’s work. Many of his rings and pendant necklaces have the air of precious amulets, with their bold composition of colourful stones. And there’s a distinct edge to his pieces too, particularly evidenced in the inverted settings that Ara employs, so that the spiky base of stones point outwards from rings and earrings. Also among his designs are rings crafted to resemble a shark’s jaws, that sit alongside comparatively delicate pieces, such as drop earrings fashioned as mobiles, set with emeralds and diamonds.
