Brent Neale takes an exuberant approach to fine jewellery. The New York designer, who launched her eponymous collection in 2017, has quickly won a loyal following for her witty and whimsical creations. Indeed, her debut collection, After the Rain, takes its cues from inspirations that span the colourful works of artists David Hockney and Ellsworth Kelly, to the imaginative worlds of her three children, to the counterculture mood of the 60s and 70s.
This quirky appeal comes through in Brent’s use of colour in her designs, working with stones including pink tourmaline, peridot, blue topaz, citrine, and amethyst to create her playful pieces. Among the motifs in Brent’s first collection are magic mushrooms, rainbows, flowers, hummingbirds, and secret doorways, taking the wearer on a journey into an enchanted garden.
Brent created her own line having earned her pedigree in the jewellery world working for Kara Ross New York for eight years, eventually becoming jewellery director of the house. There, she oversaw the design and product development of over 25 collections, alongside collaborations with designers such as Tory Burch, J. Mendel, and Naeem Khan. A graduate of John Hopkins University in her native Baltimore, Brent began attending gem shows and making jewellery by hand during her college years. She then went on to earn an associate’s degree in jewellery design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, where she studied with the late jeweller Maurice Galli.
And while she’s enmeshed in the upper echelons of the jewellery world, Brent’s designs are imbued with a distinct sense of fun. “I try to bottle a little bit of ‘childhood wonder’ …because I think it juxtaposes so beautifully with the idea of fine jewelry,” Brent tells National Jeweler.
Chic and utterly charming, Brent’s colourful designs infuse fine jewellery with joy.
