For Sara Beltrán, inspiration begins at the sea. The globe-trotting designer spends her time travelling between the shores of Morocco, Mexico, Croatia and Greece, sourcing materials and ideas for her line of sumptuous, elegant jewellery that draws on natural materials, called Dezso. The El Paso, Texas-born, Mexico-raised designer now divides her time between homes in Paris and New York – between travels, at least. She also spends time in Jaipur, India, where she finds the exotic stones that she crafts into her inventive jewellery.
Working with shark’s teeth, garnets, polki diamonds and aquamarines, Sara fashions these materials into glamorous yet effortless designs, which also draw on the strong lines of the Art Deco movement. Sara’s work is all handmade, and she notes that she values her designs’ “imperfections.” Indeed, her label’s name also nods to the visceral pull of her jewellery – Deszo takes inspiration from the word “desired.”
