Sophie Bille Brahe

Fine, delicate jewellery with a distinctly modern appeal characterizes Sophie Bille Brahe’s designs. The designer, based in Copenhagen, is a graduate of London’s Royal College of Art, and says that she draws on both “poetic elements” and a Scandinavian design aesthetic in her work. She’s also inspired by her family’s storied heritage, as she’s descended from the renowned 16th Century Danish astrologer, astronomer, and alchemist Tycho Brahe.

Background story

About the designer

Sophie launched her collection in 2011, after her designs attracted attention from influential editors and taste-makers, who encouraged her to start her own line. And while traditionally luxurious materials such as diamonds, pearls, and gold all feature in her designs, Sophie treats them with an experimental, modern hand.

One of her signature pieces is her Croissant de Lune, an earring fashioned as a series of graduated, round diamonds in a gold setting, that curve up the ear. “It’s something that you notice but at the same time it’s very subtle,” says Sophie.

About

Why we curated this designer

Pearls take on a contemporary guise in Sophie’s hands. She sets them at either end of curved, gold bars that sit through pierced ears, or places one bulbous pearl on top of the other as an earring. She was inspired to start working with pearls after her mother gave her one striking example following the birth of her son. “I thought that the pearl had the same magic touch as being pregnant; suddenly there’s a baby, like the pearl and the oyster,” says Sophie. “Pearls need to be worn, they are alive.”

The designer has also collaborated with designer Chitose Abe on a collection for her Sacai label, that spotlighted Sophie’s signature earrings laced with fringe-like chains, and has found fans in celebrities such as Alicia Vikander, Rihanna, Emma Watson, and Lily James. Fusing chic simplicity with intriguing forms, Sophie Bille Brahe is a designer to watch.
